Either way, you never know quite what to expect when you step through the doors of the Bath Decorative Antiques Fair. To help you on your way, here’s our guide to getting the best out of your visit:
1. Embrace the unexpected
Come with an open mind. The best finds often aren’t what you planned to buy. Let the fair surprise you; an overlooked piece might be the perfect fit for your home.
2. Get chatting with the dealers
The exhibitors are passionate about their collections. Ask about provenance, restoration or styling tips. You’ll gain fascinating insights and might discover a story behind a special piece.
3. Bring a measuring tape and photo of your space
You might think you remember your dining table length, but how does a sideboard look next to it? Carry a tape measure and photos of your space to visualise scale and fit.
4. Don’t dismiss wear & tear
A little patina or an old repair isn’t always a flaw. These details often add charm, authenticity and value to antique pieces.

5. Be prepared to buy or regret it!
If you love something, act fast – it may not be there when you return.
6. Consider pairing old with new
Not everything needs to match. A sleek, modern home can be elevated with a statement antique piece, and vintage finds can create a unique contrast in contemporary spaces.
7. Think beyond the original use
Antiques can be repurposed in creative ways, a vintage apothecary cabinet for bathroom storage, silver toast racks for letters, or an antique frame for a mirror.
8. Know that restoration is an option
If a piece needs a little love, ask dealers for their trusted restorers. Many offer expert advice on small touch-ups or full refinishing, ensuring your purchase lasts a lifetime.

9. Get the exhibitors’ media handles and contact details
Even if you’re just browsing, connecting with dealers can be invaluable. They might source items just for you in the future or offer exclusive pieces before they hit the fair.
10. Shop with your hands as well as your eyes
Textures matter! Run your hands over wood grain, silver detailing, or handwoven fabrics. The feel of a well-made antique is often just as telling as its appearance.
11. Don’t be afraid to mix eras
You don’t have to stick to one time period! A Georgian chest of drawers can look stunning alongside mid-century modern chairs, adding personality and depth to your space.
12. Plan for transport – even for small items
It’s easy to fall for something larger than expected. The Fair partner with BJW Logistics who will have onsite delivery options for larger items or if buying smaller pieces, bring sturdy bags or wrapping materials for safe transport home.
